A cruise can be a cost-effective way to travel around the world but that is only if you are careful. The average fare for a one-week cruise is around $1,600 but those costs can add up quick if you spend too much money once aboard the ship.
The cost of a cruise can increase anywhere from $500-$2,500 unless you avoid these expenses …
Travelers will spend more money onboard a cruise ship on alcohol than anything else. You are not allowed to bring alcohol onboard a cruise ship other than one sealed bottle of champagne or wine. Premium cocktails and specialty drinks can cost anywhere from $7.50-$15 a piece if you aren’t careful your bar bill will add up very fast. The cruise ship also limits the amount of alcohol in their cocktails too.
I recommend purchasing wine or beer onboard if you are in the mood for a cocktail. Beer and wine are cheaper and you don’t have to worry about being shorted on alcohol content. I recommend reserving drinking alcoholic beverages when you are on land. Local establishments will have much cheaper prices than the prices onboard the cruise ship.
Cruise ships have casinos onboard and gambling can cost a lot of money and fast. A bad hand of Black Jack or hours spent at the slot machines can cost you hundreds of dollars with nothing to show for it. I recommend avoiding the casino in altogether. There are so many other activities onboard the ship and at your ports that this expense is not necessary for a fun trip.
I 100% recommend going on one or two excursions during the course of a cruise but you don’t need to go on more than that. If you sign up for the excursions the cruise line offers you can spend anywhere from $20-$350 or more for each. You can find much cheaper prices from local vendors if you wait until you are off of the ship. I recommend purchasing one excursion from the cruise line and then another 1-2 more from local vendors in your ports.
#4) SPECIALTY RESTAURANTS
You can eat for free on cruise ships 24/7 so there is no need to dine at the specialty restaurants located throughout the ship. You will find menu items that cost anywhere from $20-$50 a piece or just eat for FREE at various buffets and cafeterias located throughout the ship. I also recommend eating a meal or two off of the ship to experience some of the local flavors and cuisines instead of the standards served aboard the cruise ship.
In 2017, it is hard to imagine living without internet for an entire week but I really recommend that you try to. Consider your cruise a vacation from your smartphone too! The internet aboard a cruise ship can cost up to $1 a minute and those costs will add up very fast! If you absolutely must use the internet try to only use 10-15 minutes per day and then be sure to remember to log off once you are done.
If you don’t spend too much money on alcohol, gambling, excursions and internet you can have a very cost-effective adventure during a one-week cruise and have even more money for your next trip!
